Uncommon Criminals by Ally Carter6/10/2023 ![]() No one in the house spoke of how the painting had come to be there. And the subject, the countryside near Provence, was once a favorite of an artist named Cézanne. The brushstrokes were light but meticulous. The canvas was small, perhaps only eight by ten inches. And when the Second World War was over and places like Leningrad and Berlin were nothing but rubble and crumbling walls, the residents of the big house on Tverskoy Boulevard only had to take up a hammer and drive a single nail-to hang a painting on the landing at the top of the stairs-to mark the end of a long war. ![]() When the rest of Russia stood shaking in the Siberian winds, that house had fires and gaslight in every room. When breadlines filled the streets during the reign of the czars, the big house had caviar. ![]() ![]() But the big old house on Tverskoy Boulevard had always seemed immune to these particular facts, the way that it had seemed immune to many things throughout the years. Moscow can be a cold, hard place in winter. ![]()

The Octopus Scientists by Sy Montgomery6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() Lovecraft’s eldritch horrors.īut cephalopods-a group of animals that includes squid, cuttlefish, and octopuses (not, as I used to think, “octopi”)-can be cute as well, in ways that can easily appeal to a broad range of people. But tentacled? When one is looking at a squid or cuttlefish in a market, it can be hard to think of it as anywhere near “cute”, and far easier to be reminded of H.P. ![]() Two out of three of those descriptors make sense to a broad swathe of people: pastel colours are often associated with infants and, therefore, fall into a commonly-understood spectrum of cute same thing goes for big eyes. Pastel-coloured, boogly-eyed, and tentacled: these are the primary descriptors for a particular brand of cute I’m especially fond of. ![]()

She then asks the teenagers what they saw their future as when they were kids This abruptly changes the whole conversation to the reader, as the girl replies she wanted to be a veterinarian. ![]() She asks what they were planning to do next in which the boy replies “I always kinda dug metal shop, welding… Anyway you can’t pre-plan” (92). In her conversation with two runaway teenagers, she creates a sense of disappointment and sadness towards the teenagers through verbal montage. She makes some friends along the way, as she tells her story of meeting people who lived off being high, dropping out and leaving every bit of conservatism out the door. Didion begins the essay by painting a distraught picture of America and eventually moving on to discuss the “social hemorrhaging” in San Francisco, referring to the hippie movement. ![]() |
