Kim by rudyard kipling6/6/2023 He is potentially parent-less, but by subjecting himself to various ways of life and various influences, he adopts parents to help him fill in the gaps of his identity. When no one is his parent, Kim is forced to choose who will influence him and in what way. Yet, it does determine his treatment because it affects his appearance, symbolizing the issue of treatment based on appearance. Perhaps he is deeply "Irish," still, whatever that might mean, or perhaps ethnicity doesn't amount to anything except what people make of it. He wonders what his parents influence on him might have been, since he is now orphaned, and the question of ethnic identity is explored. The protagonist is Irish by ethnicity, leading to a symbolic dilemma of identity.
